Pinehirst Student Work Experience

It’s that time of year again when students take part in a range of meaningful work experience placements. These internal placements are designed to prepare students for the world of work, helping them build valuable skills across various sectors, including Track & Rail as well as Land-Based industries such as horticulture and animal care.

In the railway industry, students gain hands-on experience in tasks such as fencing construction and maintenance, tree and shrub pruning and planting, grass cutting, path construction, brickwork, and strimming. Those on the land-based course specialising in animal care will develop essential skills in looking after both small and farm animals — including feeding and watering, maintaining housing, and grooming and preparing animals.

As part of the placement, students will also focus on developing core employability skills. These include timekeeping, problem solving, demonstrating a strong work ethic, and improving communication — particularly speaking and listening.

In June, students had a practice placement at the Pinehirst Rainford Centre to help them prepare. The main work experience programme began on 30th June 2025 and will run for four weeks, offering students a valuable opportunity to develop their practical and professional skills.
